Our Ballad — The High Note Winery Story
A ballad is a poetic narrative set to music, passed down through generations, much like the story of our winery. Our journey began over 15 years ago in Spring Valley, California, when our children left home, and we sought a new creative pursuit—winemaking. What started in our garage soon evolved into an award-winning passion, fueled by curiosity, craftsmanship, and the joy of sharing good wine.
We initially sourced grapes through winemaker clubs and personal connections, gradually expanding our expertise and production. After winning several medals—including Best in Class at the San Diego County Fair—we knew it was time to take the next step. Encouraged by friends and family, we expanded our operations, seeking out premium grape suppliers and refining our craft.
In 2018, we connected with Ron Siletto of Circle S Vineyards in San Benito AVA, whose deep knowledge of viticulture and old-growth Cabernet and Merlot vines captivated us. His generosity and passion reinforced our decision to scale up, and we began sourcing grapes for large-scale production. However, life took unexpected turns—Matt’s job moved us to Japan for three years, followed by a relocation to Texas to support family. Despite these changes, our love for winemaking remained steadfast.
Now retired in Crescent City, California, we are fully devoted to our craft. Our tasting room is open downtown at 851 3rd Street, and we'll be producing more wine at a family farmstead in Orland. Our mission has remained constant: to create, enjoy, and share fine wine in the spirit of music, connection, and community.

Blending wine, music and community into something truly meaningful.
Where every bottle sings — uniting artisan wines with the spirit of music, community, and giving.
At High Note Winery, we believe that wine and music are more than pleasures — they’re expressions of the soul. Both are crafted with care, shared with love, and meant to be experienced together. Through our support of local and national music organizations, we honor the harmony between artisan winemaking and the transformative power of the arts. From theater productions and symphonies to student music programs and cultural outreach, we’re proud to support the communities that bring melody and meaning to life.
With every bottle, we raise a glass to creativity, collaboration, and connection — and donate 10% of our sales to music-focused nonprofits that are making the world a little brighter, one note at a time.
